T H A N A T O P S I S

This project began as an emotional journey through a personal loss—the miscarriage of a child.  I explored grief and the ritual of loss, and the project slowly blossomed into a quest for meaning.

The Romantic poets contemplated the smallness of human existence and our eventual reincorporation with Nature.  The artistic tradition of memento mori aims to remind us of the inevitability of death.  Blending these ideas, my heart, and my children, I create visual poetry that searches for answers.

“...Approach thy grave,
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."

--William Cullen Bryant, from the poem Thanatopsis
